Once there was another city here, one wrapped in darkness, ruled by a single man from a thousand screens and speakers, held tightly in iron hands. They say that heroes rose up one by one and fell again and again, and that finally one hero never had a chance to rise at all, his creator dying before he could be awakened.
But cities fall, and a new one rose from its ashes - a city of light, of information, of mechanical perfection. The ruins of the old were all but forgotten, reduced to skeletal, rusted frames and piles of rubble and eventually cleared away to make way for new, gleaming towers.
It was in a building on the outskirts that they found it. At first nobody had any idea what the chipped, rusty capsule was, but finally a team of scientists lead by Dr. Cain managed to open it.
Inside, they found X, the hero of a city that had died a hundred years before he was born.
X was nearly totally complete, and it took only basic work to get him ready to awaken. When he was awoken, he proved to be something that was still unheard of - an example of true AI. Science had created simple helper robots (working in some cases on bases from the dead city, although few of them knew the exact origins), but true, thinking robots had eluded them. With his consent, X was studied, and finally his code was understood enough to allow for the birth of the 'Reploids', thinking, feeling robotic children of mankind. None were quite like X, but they were awake.
For years, that was enough - before a crippling virus began to spread through the Reploid population. It turned those infected away from their old paths, led them to start thinking about what it would mean to wrench control away from humanity, about what it would be to see the brilliant city burn. Those infected had to be destroyed, and reluctantly, X fought along the warriors, fighting a sense that somehow he had done this all before to no avail. The Maverick Hunters were formed.
They say the first Mavericks were lead by a silver and white demon, one who could kill with words as easily as with a blade, one who could easily ruin the city. Eventually, he fell or disappeared - nobody is quite sure which - but one of the greatest Hunters, Sigma, fell to the virus in the process and took on the role the demon had held.
The Hunters grew in number, and the war went on. A Reploid named Zero with seeming amnesia joined the team, and while some had their suspicions of his origins he was loyal enough and strong enough that nobody questioned him too much. He and X became partners, Zero pushing X on into the fight and X cooling Zero's temper when he had to.
Today, the war goes on, with no end in sight. The once-brilliant city is marred with darkness and wrought with constant war. The Maverick Hunters do what they can, but it seems more fall to the virus than defeat it, and splinter factions such as the Repliforce have formed to try to escape the 'corruption' of the Hunters. X grows more and more disillusioned with the idea of heroism without a cause, and Zero has begun to have odd dreams and moments where he does not feel quite himself. New recruits pour into the cause, but none will make it out unscathed.
Welcome to the City.
It's the same as it ever was.
